From the peloton

By Chris O’Brien
For the International Tour de Toona

The race started with HealthNet massed at the front and setting the pace, determined to protect their leaders jersey. Just after White Bridge on the first lap Daniel Greenfield of Louis Garneau launched an attack, gaining a 30 second gap. Perhaps hoping for an epic break away like his team mate Josh Dillon had yesterday? Alas, it was not to be.

The first KOM points went to Kodak/Sierra Nevada racer Glen Mitchell, teammate Ben Jacques-Maynes and Aerospace racer Hugh Moran, current owner of the King of the Mountain jersey.

On the descent Ben Jaques Maynes, Glen Mitchell, and Hugh Moran gained a 30 second lead on the chasing peloton.

Coming through the start/finish line at the start of the bell lap the makeup of the break had changed, but Ben Jacques-Maynes remained going strong! His initial two break mates had dropped away and four other riders had bridged the gap and their five man train was powering on with a two minute gap on the field!

The break included Snow Valley's Matthew Crane, Colavita's Davide Frattini and Aaron Olson, and Jittery Joe's Tim Johnson in addition to Kodak/Sierra Nevada's Ben Jacques-Maynes. Notably absent however, were the men of HealthNet!

And in the chasing peloton it was obvious that they were intent on changing the status quo! HealthNet massed at the front of the chase and started whittling down the gap.

Approximately ten miles from the finish HealthNet was finally close enough to see their quarry. On the foot of the final climb the peloton captured the break, and charged on over the mountain.

HealthNet and Colavita led the charge. In the final straightaway with the peloton totally shattered into multiple groups down the road it was Colavita's turn to shine with Juan Jose Haedo taking first and teammate Jonathon Page second, with HealthNet's Greg Henderson having to settle for third.
